Enter the hours per day for each activity. Rates are typical mid-range figures (shown next to each activity) — the maths is done over a 30-day month.

How to use the data usage estimator

The formula

For each activity: hours per day × GB per hour × 30 days. Add your game downloads, app updates and backups on top — they are charged by the gigabyte, not by the hour.

Planning a data cap?

Pick a plan at least 20% above the estimate. Usage creeps up over time (quality settings rise, households add devices), and a small buffer is far cheaper than overage charges.

Example

2 hours of HD streaming a day = 180 GB a month. 2 h × 3 GB/h × 30 days = 180 GB — before a single download. Add an hour of browsing (6 GB) and 50 GB of game updates and the household is at roughly 236 GB a month.

Frequently asked questions

How much data does 4K streaming really use?

Around 7 GB per hour on typical settings — roughly seven times standard definition. Two hours a night is about 420 GB a month, which is why 4K households blow through 100 GB plans.

Does online gaming use a lot of data?

Playing uses very little — around 0.1 GB per hour. It is the game downloads and updates (often 50–150 GB each) that eat a data cap, which is why they are a separate field here.

Are these rates exact?

They are typical mid-range figures published by major streaming and calling services. Your real usage varies with quality settings; your provider's app is the tie-breaker, but this estimate is close enough to choose a plan.
